Opportunities for teacher professional development are provided for all the teachers from the schools involved in the Khanyisa Inanda Community Programme.
After discussions during 2016, with the principals of the schools, it was decided to start a series of short PD sessions which we called Teacher-Time (TT) in each of the community schools. We go into the schools in their long breaks and provide them with short instructional techniques which they can immediately use in their classrooms. The techniques are practical and easily implemented by the teachers.
We use the techniques developed by Doug Lemov in his book "Teach like a Champion". Inanda Seminary teachers have used these techniques for a number of years, and they have transformed the classrooms at Inanda.
In order to ensure the support and buy-in from the teachers, we take along juice and delicious muffins for the teachers to partake of during the TT session.
Each professional development session is led by one of the teacher-interns from Inanda Seminary, who are steeped in the 'Teach like a Champion' techniques. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to share what they have learnt, and as new and innovative teachers, they inspire the teachers with their enthusiam and zeal for teaching.
