The academic programme at Inanda Seminary aims to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate examinations at the exit point in Grade 12. But we strive to do much more than merely achieve good matric results. Students become adept at using technology, develop their confidence and skills, and find their voice through an academic approach which balances solid grounding in the various academic disciplines with innovative, research-based teaching practices.
Grades 10 to 12
Students choose a subject package based on interests, needs and aptitudes.
Subject Choice Booklet for Grade 9s
Presentation for parents of Grade 9s
Compulsory Subjects
- English and isiZulu (choose one at Home language level and the other at First Additional Language level)
- Mathematics Core or Mathematical Literacy (50% pass required in Grade 9 Mathematics to take Maths Core)
- Life Orientation and Physical Education
Choice Subjects
Another 3 subjects must be chosen from:
- Accounting
- Business Studies
- Geography
- History
- Life Sciences
- Physical Sciences (50% pass required in Grade 9 Mathematics to take Physics)
Students can choose an 8th subject, but this needs to be applied for, and is usually limited to Geography or History. Students do most of the work on their own as this 8th subject is not timetabled.
Further Studies Subjects
In addition, through our partnership with AdvantageLearn, students can take Further Studies courses in Maths, English and Physics and write the IEB exams in these subjects. While there is an additional cost for this, we do usually manage to secure bursaries for students who qualify to take FS subjects (70% pass required in Grade 9 Mathematics to take FS Maths; FS Physics starts in Grade 11). These classes take place online.
IT-based Lessons
All students also have dedicated IT-based lessons:
- Grade 10s work on an Extended Research Assignment;
- Grade 11s refine and develop their use of technology for academic purposes;
- Grade 12s work on their tertiary applications (to institutions and for bursaries); various tertiary institutions also visit the school.
Grade 8 & 9
In Grade 8 and 9, the subjects follow the National Curriculum Statement.
Languages
We offer 2 languages – English and isiZulu - both at Home Language level.
The other subjects are:
- Mathematics
- Natural Sciences
- Social sciences (History and Geography are taught separately)
- Economic and Management Sciences (Accounting and Business Studies taught separately at Grade 9 level)
- Global Studies (cross-curricular skills and the use of technology for academic purposes; project-based learning)
